Thoroughbred Industry Experience
Practical Experience

My relationship with the thoroughbred industry has been driven, first and foremost, by a love for the equine participants. Having developed a foundational understanding of British racing during my role with Betfair, I felt drawn to the horses themselves and spent the following three years working directly with racehorses in leading stables in the UK.
During this time, I built upon my knowledge of industry systems, gaining an appreciation of racing from an inside perspective. I acquainted myself with the rules and regulations, taking up responsibility for the administration of treatments and care of horses. The importance of integrity and accountability was immediately obvious and expressed by my mentors with a great emphasis.
I also came to understand the delicate balance between welfare and competition. I learnt to notice subtle signs of discomfort or agitation in horses, noting that welfare parameters extend beyond basic lameness and condition assessments. Learning to notice changes in behaviour and adapt a horse's regime to ensure its continued mental and physical wellbeing was extremely valuable to me.
My primary interests within the industry concern integrity, welfare and progressive change within racing. I feel that racing's PR is dependent on these factors and that, in turn, they are essential factors in the future of the sport.
During my time with Godolphin Flying Start programme, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the global challenges facing the thoroughbred industry. Travelling across various racing jurisdictions revealed significant differences in their structures, yet I found that common challenges persisted. Gaining an appreciation of fund distribution, political dynamics, and welfare considerations allowed me to understand the complexities of decision-making in the sport. This experience deepened my interest in the intricate strategic planning involved in industry governance.
My time in Australia during the Godolphin Flying Start proved pivotal. I was immediately attracted to the way in which horses are raised and managed, with an emphasis on spelling and the longevity of racing careers. Upon graduation from the programme, I was fortunate to secure employment with Newington Farm as Operations Manager. This dynamic role has allowed me to grow in my management skills, organising staff, resources and horses. With a three sectors of the business - pre-training, breaking-in and spelling - I have been responsible for communicating with owners and fulfilling their aims for their horses. I have gained a the confidence to oversee and direct training regimes, injury rehabilitation and sales preparation, as well as the retirement and rehoming of racehorses. My communication and leadership skills have also developed through the management of staff and client relations.
